About The Role
Over the past few years Motability Operations have been moving many of their systems onto the latest technology stacks hosted on cloud infrastructure. As well as building a digital account to help our customers have more control. As part of that transformation, CI/CD processes have been adopted and product teams have been formed that are responsible for building solutions and supporting them in production. We are looking for an individual that can continue to push us forward in adopting better, more efficient ways of building quality into our products.

Main responsibilities
  • To acquire and maintain a deep technical understanding of Motability’s Systems
  • To be the lead Quality Engineer on major programmes of work, responsible for the test strategy and ensuring the ways of working adopted by the individual scrum/product teams align with the strategy.
  • Be a mentor and role model to the wider QE team to build awareness and adoption of industry best practices.
  • Drive change by influencing quality engineers, software engineers and business owners among others so that they can see the benefits of those changes
  • To champion process improvement, to actively challenge current process and to support and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain an awareness of Quality Engineering practices and developments across wider industry and drive adoption of any that are useful to Motability
  • Provide line management to a small number of Quality Engineers
  • Identify things that slow us down and remove those impediments
About You
You will have gained the following skills/experience:
Quality Advocate
You are always looking for better ways of building quality into software and actively keep abreast of how other organisations approach quality, for example via blogs, social media and conferences. You can convince others to adopt better ways of working by demonstrating the benefits of doing so. You can build a continuous learning culture within the QE team and beyond. You look beyond just functional testing to ensure that all areas of quality are being explored including performance, security, monitoring and observability of production systems to name a few. You are always striving to drive out root causes of any issues and get them fixed rather than using costly work arounds. You work with developers to ensure automated test coverage is adequate and is at the correct level e.g. unit test vs end to end user interface journeys.

Technical Leadership
You can quickly build a deep technical understanding of software and system architectures. This allows you to debate technical solutions with developers and architects from a quality perspective, for example pointing out where they make the solution harder or easier to test or perhaps discussing the optimum design for mocking a third party service. Where you encounter slow or repetitive activities you suggest ways of automating or even removing those processes, for example the automation of test data creation or generating test results. You can review developer unit tests, understand code coverage and work with developers to identify gaps. You understand and can explain with confidence technologies such as micro-services, containers, CI/CD, REST services, message queues and kafka
Stakeholder management
You are able to bring together people from different parts of the business to achieve consensus and ensure different business needs are represented.
You can help other people expand their testing skills.

Agile working
You are aware of and understand the agile methodology and can apply an agile mindset to your work. You can work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and use an iterative and flexible approach to enable rapid delivery.
Ability to think strategically
You can lead strategic quality initiatives such as introducing new automation frameworks.
Minimum Criteria:
  • Excellent SQL skills
  • Ability to write automated tests (opportunities to write and maintain automated tests will exist but are not the main responsibility of the role)
  • Excellent overall knowledge of a broad range of technologies particularly around cloud, micro services, CI/CD
  • You have successfully driven change to quality processes
  • Coding background (ideally Java, groovy or javascript)
  • Significant hands-on experience of unit/integration/functional test frameworks and tools (e.g. Cypress, JUnit, Geb, Spock, Selenium, Cucumber etc.)
  • API testing (Postman/Rest Assured etc)
Desirable Criteria:
  • Knowledge of the Atlassian tool suite including (e.g. JIRA, Confluence)
  • ISEB Software Testing Foundation (or ISTQB equivalent)
  • Jenkins pipelines
  • Openshift (PaaS) or native kubernetes
  • IDaaS
  • Accessibility Testing
  • Performance Testing
  • Pen Testing
